Arson investigation after plastic set alight in Whetsted Road, Five Oak Green, near Paddock Wood

An investigation has been launched into a suspected arson after a huge fire destroyed a large number of plastic fruit containers.

Four fire engines were sent to Whetsted Road, in Five Oak Green, near Paddock Wood, which is believed to have been started deliberately.

Black smoke could be seen from miles around as the containers burned in a field at around 3.40pm yesterday.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service told people living in the Paddock Wood and Nettlestead area to close their windows and doors due to the smoke blowing in that direction.

A water carrier was also sent to the scene before water and foam was used to put the fire out.

Crews announced the fire had been put out at around 6.30pm and lifted the warning to keep doors and windows closed around half an hour later.

There were no reported injuries.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "We were called at 3.45pm on Tuesday to a fire in Whetsted Road, Five Oak Green. The incident led to damage to property including a number of fruit bins and wooden stakes and was attended by Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

"There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious and inquiries are ongoing."
