Government to 'look again' at M26 lorry park plan after meeting with Tonbridge and Malling MP Tom Tugendhat

The Department for Transport is set to review the impact of a lorry park on the M26 after a meeting with the area's MPs and councils.

Earlier this month it was revealed roadworks on the motorway were preparing the stretch of motorway to act as a holding area for HGVs should their be trouble at the Port of Dover post-Brexit.

Tonbridge and Malling MP Tom Tugendhat has branded the proposal "unworkable", warning of the potential impact on Wrotham and Ightham and other nearby roads.

The MP met with Department for Transport on Tuesday, joined in opposition by Sevenoaks MP Sir Michael Fallon.

Leaders of Kent County Council (Paul Carter), Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council (Nicolas Heslop) and Sevenoaks District Council (Peter Fleming), also attended.

Following the meeting, Mr Tugendhat said: "Following our meeting, both the Department for Transport and Highways England have promised to go away and look again at the plans, and particularly the impacts on local roads such as the A25.

"It is also encouraging that, if needed, additional powers could be granted to Kent County Council to limit roadworks, change bus routes quickly and prevent HGVs parking in country lanes.

"We are all looking forward to meeting again to hearing what progress they have made."
