Emergency services at the scene are then understood to have closed the southbound carriageway in order to allow the air ambulance to attend. It is not yet known if it was required.

A spokesman for the police said: "Kent Police was called to a report of a serious single-vehicle collision on the A21 in Tonbridge at around 10.40am."

The northbound stretch was opened shortly after 1pm, but heavy congestion in the area remained.

The crash is believed to have taken place between the A26 Quarry Hill Road turning for Tonbridge and the A225, for Hildenborough and Sevenoaks.
