Tonbridge Angels manager Steve McKimm has every reason to be happy with their transfer business

Tonbridge boss Steve McKimm feels they have a good mix at the club after their summer transfer business.

McKimm’s new signings include experienced players Doug Loft, Ricky Modeste and Craig Braham-Barrett.

They should complement the younger players at the club as Angels prepare for a third season in National South.

McKimm said: “We’ve signed some decent players. I’m pleased with what we’ve done so far and hopefully we’ll be able to get one more in.

“We’ve got a good mix in there with the experienced players and the younger lads like Joe Turner, Tommy Wood and Ibz Olutade.

“We’re looking to step up the ladder rung by rung - we’re not going to try and do it all at once - and by signing these sorts of players, it gives us a chance to do that.

“We won’t know how it’s worked until the season’s finished. It’s good business on paper but we’ve got to go out on the pitch and produce.”

Suggestions on social media that Tonbridge have been paying big money are wide of the mark.

McKimm added: “The club give me a budget to work with and we don’t overspend. I’ve always had a squad of 16 and managed to get players in within the parameters of the budget.

“We’ve not broken the bank to get these lads in, that’s not how we work. They’re here because they want to come.

“I’ve read a few things but people have got to realise they weren’t on extraordinary money in the first place.”

Loft’s arrival is potentially the most exciting, with the former Gillingham and Port Vale captain adding Football League experience in midfield.

Margate thought they had him after he left Billericay but the 34-year-old joined Tonbridge instead. “He’s had a great career,” said McKimm. “Hopefully we can get a season or two out of him here.”

Tonbridge have made a bright start to pre-season, with 2-0 and 3-0 wins over Colliers Wood and Chipstead respectively. Next up are home friendlies against Grays Athletic on Saturday and Lewes on Tuesday.
