Tonbridge Angels 2 Torquay United 1 FA Trophy match report

Substitute Ibrahim Olutade’s late goal saw Tonbridge upset Torquay in the FA Trophy.

Olutade had only been on the pitch three minutes when he scored the goal that saw Angels KO their National League opponents.

It was a thoroughly deserved victory for Steve McKimm’s side, who worked their socks off all over the park against a Gulls outfit who arrived at Longmead in good form after back-to-back league wins.

Joe Turner gave Tonbridge an early lead and while Danny Wright levelled, it was the home side who reached round four thanks to Olutade’s late heroics.

Tonbridge handed a debut to on-loan AFC Wimbledon youngster Luke Jenkins, who lined up in a back three, while Turner partnered Tommy Wood in attack.

Gulls wing-back Jack Sparkes, on loan from Devon neighbours Exeter, looked bright in the early stages, working Jonny Henly and teeing up Ben Wynter, whose dangerous cross was cut out by Sonny Miles.

But it didn’t take long for Tonbridge to find their stride, Wood using his strength to hold up the ball and bring the Angels midfield into play.

A nice passage of play, halted by a foul on Adam Lovatt, led to the opening goal in the ninth minute.

Tom Beere floated in a lovely free-kick and Turner got the run on his marker and planted home a firm header.

Sparkes fired wide after cutting inside before Angels twice went close to a second goal.

First, keeper Mark Halstead had to react quickly to tip over a Turner cross that was heading for the far top corner.

Then, when another Turner cross was blocked, the loose ball dropped to Miles, who was denied by a very good Halstead save.

Wright headed over at the near post from Tom Lapslie’s cross - Torquay’s first real opening of the match against an Angels side who had defended well to restrict them to a couple of efforts from outside the area.

But, having looked good at the back, a breakdown somewhere left Wright on his own in the area from Armani Little's pass to prod home Torquay’s 34th-minute leveller.

Torquay went on to control the rest of the half, forcing Angels back, with the interval coming at a good time for McKimm’s men.

Henly held Armani Little’s strike and Sparkes fired wide as Torquay looked to pick up where they left off.

Lovatt went close with a cracking strike from Beere’s lay-off for Tonbridge midway through the half, with Henly denying Klaidi Lolos at the other end after a neat turn.

Soon after, Jenkins had the ball in the net for Tonbridge but celebrations were cut short by the referee’s whistle, a decision that stood after a chat with his linesman.

Just shy of the 80-minute mark, Henly was sharply off his line to block with his legs after Sinclair Armstrong went through one-on-one from Sparkes’ through ball.

The end-to-end finale continued as Lovatt’s shot was blocked by a defender by the near post and Harry Hudson tested Halstead after Tom Parkinson flicked on Beere’s free-kick.

Angels’ winner followed when Olutade - not long on the pitch - finished from close range in the 86th minute after a spill by Halstead.
