Wimbledon 21 Tonbridge Juddians 36: National League 2 East match report

By Adam Hookway

Tonbridge Juddians got the job done at Wimbledon with a 36-21 win in National League 2 East moving them into the top four.

Judds secured the try bonus point by half-time and took the remaining four with two more scores in the second half.

Wimbledon played with the slight slope and the breeze in the first half, but Judds started the brighter.

A couple of changes in the backline saw Guy Rogers and Raff Hollister making their debuts on the wing and at centre respectively - and it was Rogers who opened the scoring when the ball was spread wide and right after good approach work by the pack after 11 minutes.

Penalties helped Tonbridge find territory and more to set up an attacking lineout from which a series of drives culminated in Ryan Munnelly crashing over for try number two on 19 minutes.

Wimbledon then saw more of the ball and set up some nice angles in the backs to close the gap before going in front 14-10 on the half-hour mark.

There was no panic in the TJ ranks, though, and on 35 minutes Will Holling was the beneficiary of another set of drives by the pack. Sam Evans converted to edge TJs back in front by three.

Next came the try of the day with TJs attacking down the left. A deft cross-kick from Evans reached Rogers in a little space and his step and swivel found Duncan Tout on the loop and he did the rest for a 22-14 half-time lead.

With the elements now in their favour, TJs were able to put early pressure on the Wimbledon line. The home side collapsed another TJs drive and a penalty try made it 29-14 after 45 minutes.

It took 15 minutes for the next score to arrive. TJs found a yard of space to send Evans over before converting his effort, while Wimbledon had the final say, crashing over through their forwards.

Worthing, in 12th, visit The Slade on Saturday (3pm).
