Long-serving Tonbridge goalkeeper Jonny Henly is set to leave the club.

Fans’ favourite Henly will move on to pastures new after more than 300 club appearances following this Saturday’s season-ending home game against St Albans for Jay Saunders’ mid-table National League South side.

As the club announced the news on Wednesday morning, Henly said: “I’ve loved my time at Tonbridge Angels and want to thank all the fans for their amazing support over the years and that very special chant.

“I feel it’s now time for a fresh challenge and I want to leave the club on top after more than 300 appearances.

“I will miss everyone and will always hold Tonbridge Angels close to my heart.”

Manager Saunders said: “It’s been a real pleasure to work with Jonny, who is such a positive and big character around the place.

“He’s been an outstanding goalkeeper for Tonbridge Angels and we all wish him the very best for his future career.”

Henly joined in March 2017 after the regular keeper Anthony Di Bernardo suffered an injury in an ill-fated game against Needham Market and, after playing in the last 11 games of the season, then-boss Steve McKimm decided Henly would be his No.1 for the following season.

Di Bernardo was released and the rest - as they say - is history.

Henly, who represented Scotland at under-19 and under-21 levels, joined the club from Hemel Hempstead after he had started his career at Reading.

The 30-year-old quickly built up a great rapport with Angels’ fans, three times being voted as runner-up in the supporters’ player-of-the-year award and was a member of the successful Isthmian Premier Super Play-off-winning team of 2019.

“On behalf of everyone associated with the club, I would like to thank Jonny for his total dedication and commitment as Tonbridge Angels’ longest-serving goalkeeper,” added club chair Sophie Purves.

“Jonny will always remain a club legend and will always be very welcome here.

“I would also like to thank Jonny’s father, John Henly, and all his family for the fantastic support they have shown to the club over the years.”
