Tonbridge Angels boss Steve McKimm has mixed emotions after draw

Steve McKimm had mixed feelings after Tonbridge drew 4-4 with Leatherhead on Tuesday night.

Angels led through an early Nick Wheeler goal but were 3-1 down by the break.

A half-time rollicking did the trick as Angels went 4-3 up with goals from Tom Phipp, Nathan Elder and Jack Parter but Jimmy Bullard’s side equalised with just over 10 minutes left.

Boss McKimm said: “We scored a good goal to start with but then stepped off the gas, which isn’t acceptable. I rattled a few cages at half-time and they executed in the second half what I wanted them to do in the first half.

“I’ve got to give the players credit to come back from the position we were in. I’ll take a point from 3-1 down but when you get yourselves 4-3 and the equaliser goes in, it’s disappointing in terms of you think back to the first half when they didn’t do what I asked of them.”

It was Elder’s second goal in two games after scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Lowestoft last weekend.

Four points from their last two games have moved Angels back into the Ryman League, Premier Division play-off places.

They sit fifth going into the trip to struggling Canvey Island on Saturday, then it’s promotion rivals Leiston away on Wednesday.

McKimm, who has signed striker Dan Thompson from Burgess Hill, said: “It’s the first time we’ve been in that top five for a while. Canvey will be a difficult game. It’s not been a happy hunting ground.

“As for Leiston, they’re fourth in the league because they deserve to be. They’re definitely going to be around the play-offs, if not winning the league.”
