Former Tunbridge Wells councillor Bob Backhouse has died

A popular local politician has died.

Robert (Bob) Backhouse represented Sherwood Ward on Tunbridge Wells Borough Council three times from 2014 until 2022.

He missed out on a fourth term when he was defeated by Shadi Rogers (Lab) in last May's election by 117 votes.

He was also a long-standing member of Southborough Town Council, where a former colleague Nasir Jamil said: "Bob was my best friend and colleague.

"I have known Bob since 2007 when I was first elected as a Southborough Town Councillor.

"I was very impressed by his lively and friendly personality and we became friends instantly.

"He had a vast knowledge of local government and was always very keen to help new colleagues."

Mr Jamil said: "He liked colourful flowers and knew the names of many plants by heart which he told us during door-to-door canvassing when he came across them.

"Bob always cared about the community and was always willing to help his constituents.

"He was very passionate about the TN2 Community Centre and a great supporter of building affordable housing in Sherwood.

"I was devastated to hear the sad news of his sudden death while I was on holiday.

"He was a devoted community leader who achieved a lot for his Sherwood and Southborough wards. He will always be in my thoughts."

Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark was another to pay tribute.

He said: "Bob was 100% devoted to serving his residents and achieved so much for them and for the Sherwood community. He was also an ever supportive friend. "

Mr Backhouse, of Sandhurst Road, Tunbridge Wells, passed away on the evening of Thursday, last week.

He was 66.
