British Military Fitness event in Tunbridge Wells

One of the UK's leaders in outdoor fitness, British Military Fitness, is encouraging the people of Tunbridge Wells to improve their lifestyles.

National Outdoor Fitness Day is on Saturday, May 30, and free military fitness sessions for all will be held across the country including a session at the town's common.

Now in its second year, the fitness day is designed to raise awareness of the benefits of outdoor activities and to encourage people of all ages to enjoy physical activity.

Recent studies found exercising outside helps to improve energy levels and decrease stress to a greater extent than working out indoors.

Established in 1999 with a class of just three participants, British Military Fitness - the organisation behind the events - now holds over 400 classes a week with 13,000 participants at 140 outdoor locations.

Following its successful launch last year, Harry Sowerby, managing director of British Military Fitness, is hoping that this year’s National Outdoor Fitness Day will encourage even more people in Tunbridge Wells to reap the benefits of outdoor exercise.

He said: “People often associate exercise with slogging away in a stuffy gym, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are so many fun ways to get involved in exercise in the great outdoors, whether that’s going on a walk around the park, riding a bike or taking part in an outdoor exercise class such as British Military Fitness.

“It’s been 16 years since our first BMF class and in that time we’ve helped thousands of people discover the benefits of exercising outside. I’m hoping that on this year’s National Outdoor Fitness Day, more people will come and join us for a fun fitness session outdoors – see you in the park!”

Steven Ward, executive director of ukactive, added: “This is an exciting time for the physical activity sector, with much greater focus within central and local Government on the role physical activity has to play in improving the health and wellbeing of the nation. ukactive’s aim is uncompromising – to get more people, more active, more often."

The Tunbridge Wells event will take place on Saturday, May 30 at 9am at The Common.
