Up to a dozen people could be seen in orange hi-vis jackets wearing clothing with the group's name yesterday (Saturday).

Pete Wood, who captured an image of the protest, said: "There were approximately 10-12 people stood in the lane of the road heading towards the centre of Tunbridge Wells.

"They hadn't obstructed the entire road – just one lane, so traffic was simply using the other lane to pass them.

"As the temporary traffic lights were restricting use of the whole road anyway, traffic was already sharing use of one lane so everyone was just having to give way to each other to keep traffic moving.

"For the time I saw them, they were just stood holding banners, with one person in front of the group essentially instructing them.”

Founded in February 2022, Just Stop Oil is a British environmental group which campaigns for the government to stop producing fossil fuels.

It has gained both praise and criticism for their methods of activism, which have included road protests and vandalism.

A number of members have also been arrested across the country after causing damage to property.

However, a spokeswoman for Kent Police said: "At around 10.40am on Saturday (November 4), officers attended St Johns Road in Tunbridge Wells following reports of a protest.

"No arrests were made and the event concluded at 11.47am."

The reaction to the protest sparked mixed reviews online, although more people appeared to be against the activism.

One person said: "I get their beliefs and I’m sure it’s for a good cause, but the way that they are going about it is not smart.

"They are not spreading a positive message – they are merely causing a massive inconvenience, blocking people from doing their jobs, getting to their families and even blocking ambulances."

However, another added: "We all care about democracy and hold up the right to have freedom of speech.

"We need people to do this to remind everyone that this is a real issue."
