St Mary's Church in Goudhurst could get CCTV after vandals target stained glass windows

Villagers are looking to club together and fund CCTV after an historic church was targeted by vandals.

A series of holes were made in the stained glass windows of St Mary's Church in Goudhurst, believed to be from stones or ball bearings.

It is the second time the church, which dates back to 1119, has been damaged in such a way in the last year, with these latest repairs expected to be costly both financially and in terms of volunteer time.

In response, worshippers and others living in the village have suggested a crowdfunding campaign to help secure CCTV coverage in future, with several already expressing an interest in contributing via social media.

An online fundraising page has not yet been set up but church leaders confirmed they were looking into options around installing cameras.

Rev Hugh Nelson said: "The response of the local community was striking but exactly what I have come to expect from people in Goudhurst who are consistently supportive."

The church has rounded up 25 volunteers over the last eight months as it continues to help carry out crucial work in the community, with an increased emphasis on mental health around young people in recent times.
