Plans for 400 homes at Hawkhurst Golf Club to go on show

Plans for 400 homes and a relief road on the site of a golf club are set to go on show.

Developers have earmarked Hawkhurst Golf Club as an area for the new houses and a relief road and the proposals will be available for the public to see next week.

Twenty years after it was first mooted, the relief road would run between the A268 to and from Flimwell and the A229 to and from Cranbrook.

As well as serving as the access to the development, the new route would reduce traffic through Hawkhurst and relieve congestion at Highgate crossroads.

The plans, proposed by the golf club’s owners Cedardrive Ltd, would also feature new community facilities including public car parking to serve the village centre, and a new country park between Hawkhurst and Gills Green.

The provision of the new relief road would also see the closing off to traffic of the Cranbrook Road arm of the Highgate crossroads, providing the opportunity to create a new focal point for the village.

The proposed new homes would be of various sizes, including social and sheltered housing, with 375 on the golf course land and 34 on the adjoining Springfield site which has already been allocated for housing, giving a total of 409 homes.

The new units would include a wide mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced homes, apartments and self-build plots.

New paths would link the new homes to the village centre, which is less than a 10-minute walk away.

Jonathan Buckwell, a spokesperson for the project, said: “The Cedardrive team has taken great care to ensure that the landscape-led design is sympathetic and wholly in keeping with the surroundings.

“Our proposals consist of a number of smaller development areas, each showing different character attributes and which reflect a village feel rather than that of one large estate.

“The golf course is under-used and has seen a significant decline in membership in recent years. The site offers a unique opportunity for Hawkhurst to meet its proposed housing allocation in the Tunbridge Wells Local Plan at a site at the heart of the village, rather than in outlying areas of the parish.”

The proposals go on show at Hawkhurst Royal British Legion Club, Unity Hall, High Street, Hawkhurst, on Tuesday, February 12, and Thursday, February 14. The public exhibition is open between 1pm and 8pm on both days.

Further details about the proposals can be found here.
