Paddock Wood golf day puts food on empty plates of hungry families

It seems everyone is coming together to put food on the plates of those struggling in these extremely challenging times.

Now 20 local Dads have dusted off their golf clubs to take part in the Paddock Wood Open Charity Golf Day at the Poult Wood Golf Club near Tonbridge - raising £1,550 for the town's Community Storehouse Food Bank in the process.

The golfers played observing social distancing rules, raising £1,300 on the day that was topped up by a further £150 in donations plus a donation of £100 worth of food from Tesco.

All the money will be used to feed families in the local area who are struggling to make ends meet.

Many of the golfers have their own businesses of which nine sponsored a hole, each donating £50 and a prize to win in a “nearest the pin” or “longest drive” competition.

They included Victorious Admin Support and Consultancy, The Production Hub, Allaboutpethealth.com, Bromby and Evans, and MC Electricals.

In addition to the golf, there was a raffle with more than 40 prizes generously donated by Paddock Wood businesses including Waitrose, Tesco, The John Brunt, Poult Wood Golf Club, Paddock Wood Cards, PW Pharmacy, Oliver’s, Wine Mill, Jay’s Barbers, Paddock Wood Motorist Centre, Dino Golf, Ye Olde Cobblers, PJ Electricals, Tonbridge Golf Centre and Firefly.

The organiser, Matt Hazledine, said he was delighted with how the day went and the large sum of money raised.

Gill Lloyd from The Community Storehouse said: “We are overwhelmed by the fundraising efforts of Matt’s enthusiastic group of golfers.

"The significant amount of money will help to stock our shelves with items which we regularly run short of, as well as providing some Christmas parcels for some of our clients.

She said: "The ‘Dads of Paddock Wood’ are yet another example of how supportive our local community has been this year to the work of the foodbank.”

Julie White, the manager of Tesco Paddock Wood said: “I have lived and worked in Paddock Wood for the past four years and I enjoy working with the local community. We were delighted to be able to help.”

The golf was won by Nick Hames of The Production Hub.
