Metropolitan policeman Spencer Garland dismissed after crashing car while double drink drive limit

A Metropolitan policeman has been sacked and disqualified from driving after crashing his car while double the drink drive limit.

PC Spencer Garland, who worked in Redbridge, is believed to have been on duty during the 7/7 bombings and also served as a soldier in Bosnia and Kosovo.

But in February his life changed for ever, when he crashed his car in Pembury.

On March 21 at Sevenoaks magistrates court the Kings Hill policeman was convicted for drink driving, sentenced to an 18-month driving disqualification and fined £400.

Now, after a Metropolitan Police misconduct hearing, Garland has been dismissed for "discreditable conduct".

At the hearing, PC Garland was said to have failed to meet the required standards of professional behaviour.

Following the hearing, Assistant Commissioner Helen King, said: "Drink driving brings discredit on the police service as a whole because public confidence depends on police officers demonstrating the highest standards of personal and professional behaviour.

"This type of offending undermines public confidence in the police service and immediate dismissal is the appropriate sanction."
