A blaze in the middle of woodland has prompted a warning to campers urging them to remain vigilant when putting out fires.

Crews were called to the scene in Radfall Road in Chestfield, near Whitstable, just before 10.20am yesterday.

They arrived to find a deep-seated undergrowth blaze, which they battled for about half an hour.

They believe the flames spread from a campfire that had not been fully extinguished.

A fire service spokesman said: "We are reminding the public to ensure campfires and bonfires are always lit well away from any greenery, and to never leave them unattended.

"Once finished, you should make sure they are fully extinguished, and the area properly cooled, before leaving."

There were no reported injuries.
