Coronavirus Kent: Man charged for allegedly spitting in Iceland supermarket worker's face

Police have charged a man with common assault after he allegedly spat in the face of a supermarket worker.

Oliver Cook, 35, was pinned to the ground and arrested outside Iceland in Whitstable's High Street yesterday afternoon.

Of no fixed address, Cook has been bailed and is due to appear before magistrates in May.

During yesterday's incident, officers resorted to putting a spit-hood over the suspect's head.

The store manager told KentOnline how his staff were left shocked but are all OK following the unsavoury assault.

New powers announced by the Crown Prosecution Service this week allow police to charge anyone who coughs at key workers with common assault.
