Kent's three-day friendly with Leeds/ Bradford University Centre of Cricketing Excellence was abandoned as a draw after heavy rain put paid to Monday's final session, but not before the hosts were hit by an injury to ex-Test star Geraint Jones.

Both teams unashamedly used the fixture for batting practice and it was the full-time professionals of Kent who came out marginally ahead of the part-time students.

Home batsmen hogged centre stage on the opening day-and-a-half as Kent amassed 481 for five in only 101 overs.

Opening pair Joe Denly and Rob Key both hit centuries, 122 and 105 respectively, for their part in a first wicket stand worth 225 as the rookie visitors struggled for a breakthrough on such a placid St Lawrence pitch.

In-form Martin van Jaarsveld, fresh from pre-season tons against Surrey and Nottinghamshire, maintained his run with 99 and there were further contributions from Matt Walker (58), Darren Stevens (49 not out) and Geraint Jones (29) before the first showers of the game forced Kent's declaration.

In the remaining four sessions the Leeds/ Bradford side showed they too had batting talent, none more so than James Moorhouse, a right-hander from Rotherham Town Cricket Club who hit an excellent 94 from 160-balls before edging to slip.

Duncan Snell, a stylish left-hander from York, also reached a half-century with a sweetly-timed straight drive for four off Denly's leg-spin, and was still unbeaten on 82 when the heavens opened forcing umpires David Millns and Graham Burgess to abandon the match.

The hosts suffered one injury scare when keeper Geraint Jones took a blow to his right index finger. As a precaution Jones was replaced behind the stumps by Kent's coaching co-ordinator Simon Willis, but at this point the injury is thought to be merely bruising.

Jones is hopeful of making the starting line up when Kent begin their LV County Championship campaign for 2008 at St Lawrence on Wednesday, when newly-promoted Nottinghamshire provide the opposition.

With new arrivals Azhar Mahmood, Ryan McLaren and Yasir Arafat on hand to boost morale and numbers, Kent will be at near full-strength.

Robbie Joseph (heel) and Amjad Khan (hamstring) will not be risked, but otherwise skipper Key will have a full squad to select from.

Kent's likely squad: Key, Denly, van Jaarsveld, Walker, Stevens, Jones, Tredwell, McLaren, Mahmood, Cook, Arafat, Saggers, Dexter.
