T20 Blast 2018: Surrey v Kent Spitfires match report

Joe Denly scored his fourth T20 century and took a hat-trick to secure Kent a win in their opening T20 match against Surrey.

Denly smashed his way to 102 as Kent posted 173 batting first on Friday at The Kia Oval.

It was to be his night as he then took a hat-trick with the ball as the Spitfires secured victory by six runs.

New Zealand overseas fast bowler Adam Milne got an early breakthrough in the Surrey run chase when he got Will Jacks caught by Sam Billings for 12 in his first over.

Rory Burns and Ben Foakes then got the home side off to a blistering start smashing their side to 71-1 in the first six overs.

The pair put on 85 for the second wicket before Burns was bowled by Haggett for 39 in the ninth over.

Foakes completed his half-century in 28 balls to put the home side in a match-winning position.

Denly (3-31) provided resistance with the ball taking a hat-trick in the 13th over to pull Kent back into the match. His victims were Rikki Clarke, Jamie Smith and Mat Pillans.

Foakes started to run out of partners as wickets continued to fall with Carlos Brathwaite (2-21) bowling well at the death.

Adam Milne (3-22) then held his nerve in the penultimate over to claim two wicket in two balls to seal the win. Ben Foakes was left stranded on 75 not out.

Earlier in the match, Sam Billings won the toss and chose to bat but the Spitfires suffered an early setback when they lost Daniel Bell-Drummond (0) in the first over after he was caught by Rory Burns off Jade Dernbach.

Joe Denly and Heino Kuhn batted well together to put on a 104 run partnership before the latter was out for 30 when he skied one for Ben Foakes to catch behind the stumps off Morne Morkel. Quick running between the wickets saw Kent score quickly through the middle overs.

Denly played a superb innings to reach 102 from 63 balls and included 12 fours and two sixes. He had particular success against Surrey spinners Freddie van den Bergh (0-29 from 3) and Gareth Batty (0-25 from 2).

The Kent middle order struggled to get going with Mat Pillans (3-22) bowling well at the end of the innings.

Teenager Jamie Smith took a brilliant catch off Pillans to dismiss Carlos Brathwaite without troubling the scorers.

Surrey skipper Jade Dernbach also bowled well at the start and end of the innings to take 2-32.
