Seam bowler Michael Hogan, 41, joins Kent on one-year deal as he makes U-Turn on his retirement

A 41-year-old seam bowler has joined Kent.

Australian-born Michael Hogan qualifies as a domestic cricketer due to his English passport and length of service in the county game, and he has been a stand-out performer in English cricket since he joined Glamorgan in 2013.

He has re-thought plans to retire from the professional game this summer, instead joining Kent on a one-year contract in a switch which will raise a few eyebrows given Hogan's age.

Hogan will also be part of the club’s coaching set-up next season during their defence of the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The news comes a day after seam bowler Harry Podmore left Kent for Glamorgan on what has been described as "a multi-year contract".

“I’m really looking forward to a fresh challenge at this stage of my playing career,” Hogan said.

“After 10 memorable seasons with Glamorgan, the opportunity to play for Kent in Division 1 of the [County] Championship, and to also cut my teeth mentoring in a new environment, is an exciting one.”

He was nominated for the PCA’s player-of-the-year award in his first season in Wales, and then helped them win the Royal London One-Day Cup in 2021. He also featured for the Southern Brave in the 2022 edition of The Hundred.

Hogan has claimed 681 first-class scalps in his career at an average of 24.75.

In the 2022 LV= Insurance County Championship, he played in all 14 matches, bowling 418 overs as he took 45 wickets.

Kent director of cricket Paul Downton said: “Hoges has been an outstanding bowler for many years and will bring a vast amount of experience to our bowling unit.

“His numbers show he is an invaluable acquisition, and he continues to be a threat in both four-day and T20 cricket.

“I’m particularly excited about the knowledge he will bring with him, which will be invaluable to all our bowlers, particularly the young and upcoming talents at the club.”

Kent have been looking to bolster their bowling options after the departures of legendary all-rounder Darren Stevens and Matt Milnes, who has joined Yorkshire, as well as Podmore’s exit this week.
