A statement on the club's Facebook page announced "it is with great sadness that we heard of the passing of one of our former players Keith 'Flash' Ashburn" and went onto describe him as "a big character on and off the pitch" who had played a big part in helping the team achieve back to back promotions.

Keith's father Derek Ashburn also took to Facebook to say: "I lost my best friend, my life and my son today. A father could never be prouder than I am. Wow it hurts your gone."

Both posts prompted an outpouring of tributes and a flood of support from family and friends.

Commenting on the ruby club's Facebook page, one friend said: "'Flash' was a ferocious defender, equally devastating in attack and an all round good bloke off the field. He will be sorely missed. RIP Royal."

Another added: "Terrible news, great guy and fearless on and off the pitch so sad taken too early."

"RIP Royal, top bloke, my heart felt condolences to his family and loved ones, tragic loss," added another.

Investigators from Kent Police are now appealing for information and officers are asking any witnesses to get in contact.

Emergency crews were called to the collision just before 9.20am on Monday and police later confirmed a motorcyclist in his 30's had sadly been pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information should call 01622 798538 quoting reference HW/MW/109/21.
