Sarah Everard: Book of condolences opens in Deal 'to tell parents how saddened town is'

A book of condolences for the family of Sarah Everard can be signed in Deal tomorrow.

Shoppers in the town's precinct can leave a message for the 33 year-old's family outside St George's Church in the High Street from 10am until noon.

It comes after an inquest into her death was opened and adjourned yesterday and Sarah's body was released to her parents.

Another post mortem has been ordered because the results of a first were inconclusive.

Deal town councillor Susan Carlyle told the Mercury: "We really feel we need to do something in Deal as, sadly, we are a part of this terrible story.

"We would like Sarah's family to know how horrified and saddened we are as citizens of this town."

Deal has been central to the murder investigation since last Wednesday after serving Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens was arrested the night before at his home in Freemens Way.

As two vehicles and a motorbike were taken from his home, and a police tent was erected in Couzens' garden, a body was found later that day in a wooded area at Great Chart near Ashford. The following day the remains were confirmed as belonging to Sarah and a first post mortem took place on Friday.

Couzens has since been charged with kidnap and murder.

Searches of the Couzens' family's former garage and surrounding land in Dover have since taken place. And a lengthy search of The Ropewalk and the associated waterway in Sandwich has been ongoing since last Sunday. The neighbouring Guildhall and Co-op car parks, The Butts and a builders' yard off Woodnesborough Road are also being scoured.

In Sandwich, a book of condolence was opened yesterday in the porch of St Peter's Church in Market Street, Sandwich.

Cllr Carlyle, who represents the North Deal ward on the town council, added: "We are looking for any help people can offer, maybe to hold a placard or talk about the issues, so please come forward and make it a worthwhile idea."
