Man stabbed in Athol Terrace, Dover, as road sealed off for hours

Horrified residents have told how police cars came “screaming” into their road after a man was stabbed.

Others say there was blood on the street following the attack in Athol Terrace, Dover, at 6.15pm on Sunday.

Police say a man in his 30s was taken to a local hospital, while a 48-year-old man was arrested.

Neighbours say a section of the street, right next to the Eastern Docks, was sealed off for several hours while officers combed the areas for clues.

Karen Walker, of nearby East Cliff, was walking her dog on the White Cliffs and could see a police car blocking the road entrance to Athol Terrace.

She told KentOnline: “Another dog walker coming up the hill told me: ‘You probably won't’ be able to get through there at the bottom – someone’s been stabbed.’

“I got down to the bottom at 8.15pm and about half to a quarter of Athol Terrace was sealed off and a forensics van was there.

“The police were very helpful when I told them I was a resident and needed to get home. They guided me to walk around the cordon.

“I could see a pool of blood outside the red telephone box at Athol Terrace and there was blood on the bonnet of a car.

“I’ve never seen blood on the street before. You see things like that on TV but when you see it for real it’s eerie.

“But I wasn’t scared because I knew whatever had happened was over now.”

A male neighbour, who did not want to be named, told KentOnline: “The police cars were screaming along East Cliff towards Athol Terrace at speed and with their blue lights on.

“They were still there until 11pm. There were up to three police cars and a police van there.

“The area was sealed off for hours, so people trying to return home were told by officers they couldn’t come in, that this was now a crime scene.

“I was horrified but this is the kind of thing you can get in Dover. It’s not the most refined town.”

A spokesman for Kent Police said today: “We were called to a report that a man had been assaulted at a property in Athol Terrace.

“Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and a man in his 30s was taken to a local hospital with an arm injury consistent with a stab wound.”

Police say a 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault. He was at first placed in custody but by today (Tuesday) was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information, should call Kent Police on 01843 222289, quoting the reference number 46/158438/23.
