Anonymous donation of £3,500 allows family to provide daughter with specialist wheelchair

An anonymous donor has pledged £3,500 to help a disabled child get the specialist wheelchair she needs.

Katherine Shrubsole, four, of Boulevard Courrieres in Aylesham was born by crash C-section in January 2011.

She was subsequently diagnosed with brain damage caused by oxygen loss which has led to hearing problems, a rare form of epilepsy and hyper mobility of the joints. She also has a development delay.

Parents Joseph Millard and Amy Shrubsole have been campaigning to get their daughter a wheelchair called a Kiddo Tilt which has improved posture support. It costs just under £5,000 and will last her throughout the teenage years.

The wheelchair is also light enough so she can propel herself and has adjustable handles for whoever is pushing her.

Miss Shrubsole, a former Gala Bingo worker in Dover, said Katherine will benefit from it when she starts the Whitfield and Aspen School in September.

The 31-year-old contacted the person who donated the large sum to make sure it wasn’t a mistake.

She said: “They called us back on Monday night and said they know what it is like and what a difference the right stuff makes.

“It means now we only have a few hundred pounds to pay.

“I can eventually buy an extension pack and it can take a weight of up to 12 stone.”

Katherine has been using a wheelchair supplied by the NHS,- but it doesn’t support her very well and the adjustable back causes her body to slump.

Miss Shrubsole said: “If there is any extra we would like to give it to other children.

“We are always trying to raise money for other equipment.

“A big thank you to everyone in general and a specific thank you to our anonymous donor.”

The anonymous gift has raised the online fundraising total to £4,500.
