Dover Strait may be World Heritage Site

The Strait of Dover could become a World Heritage Site if a joint bid by Eurotunnel and French officials is successful.

Eurotunnel and the Conseil General of the Pas-de-Calais will make the bid to UNESCO and the company believes tourism on both sides of the Channel will benefit.

If the bid is successful, the Straight of Dover will join 28 UK sites on the World Heritage list including Canterbury Cathedral and the Tower of London.

Dover MP Gwyn Prosser said he thought the proposal was a wonderful idea.

"As well as the dramatic views of the White Cliffs of Dover from the Strait, it has all the heritage and historical connections.

"The Battle of Britain took place overhead during the Second World War and the planning and organisation of operations took place in the tunnels under the White Cliffs, " he said.
