Two men taken to court after dropping litter in Pencester Park, Dover

Two men have picked up a total bill of more than £700 for littering drink cans in a town centre park.

The prosecution was brought forward by Dover District Council (DDC) after the duo were caught on CCTV each throwing a can in Pencester Park, in Dover on November 23 last year.

Following an investigation, the individuals were identified by Kent Police as Yan Barnes and Aaron Bloomfield.

On February 6, Mr Barnes and Mr Bloomfield were interviewed at DDC offices, and both identified themselves as persons responsible for depositing litter in the CCTV footage.

Mr Barnes and Mr Bloomfield, both 39, were each issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice.

When no payments were received, DDC took the matters to court.

On Wednesday, Mr Barnes, of Clarendon Place, Dover, was found guilty in his absence of depositing litter, and was fined £220 and ordered to pay costs of £225 with a victim surcharge of £88, making a total bill of £533.

Mr Bloomfield, of Folkestone Road, Dover, pleaded guilty to an offence of depositing litter, and was fined £40 and ordered to pay costs of £150 with a victim surcharge of £16, making a total of £206.

Cllr Jamie Pout, DDC cabinet member for environmental services said: “We are proud of our environment, and continue to work hard to keep Dover district clean and tidy.

“Littering is not only unsightly, but it has environmental consequences for the area.

“We continue to work with our communities for a cleaner and greener future, and to take action to tackle littering.”
