High temperature blamed for field fires

Soaring temperatures on Saturday could have been the cause of a spate of field fires in the Dover area.

Firefighters were called to hay bales alight at a farm in Alkham and on land off Kimberley Close, Dover.

For four hours on Saturday night crews were joined by firefighters from Folkestone when smoke from burning hay drifted across the A20 between Dover and Folkestone.

Watch manager at Dover Tony Scott said: "The cause for all three fires is unknown, but hot weather could have been a factor."

Firefighters from Deal were also called to farmland at Sholden on Saturday when cut wheat caught alight between The Street and Church Lane.

Two crews were at the scene for 90 minutes after the 999 call just after 5pm and it is believed the hot weather could have caused the blaze.
