A QUICK-THINKING homeowner has been praised by fire crews for his actions which prevented a fire destroying his home.

The fire broke out at lunchtime today at the terraced house in Erith Street, Dover, destroying the top floor.

Four fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus were called to deal with the blaze. No one was hurt and fire investigators said the incident was not suspicious.

Fire officer Mick Dennis said: "As I approached the house, I could see thick smoke pouring from the window and the roof. I called four fire crews for assistance and we used four sets of breathing apparatus."

Deal Fire Station manager, John Yore, said: "Thankfully the inhabitant, on discovering the fire, removed himself from the building immediately. He closed every door behind him before alerting 999. This helped contain the fire to just the first floor. He had an escape plan and used it to full effect."
