Landscaping waste blaze sparks 999 calls from residents who saw smoke billowing from grassland

A large fire in Dover was brought under control by firefighters in the early hours of this morning.

One appliance tackled the blaze in Astor Avenue from 1.11am, after receiving a number of calls from residents who could see and smell the smoke.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue confirmed it was a "large amount" of landscaping waste alight.

Resident Peter Nix said he could see the smoke from Coombe Valley Road.

The crew remained in the grassland, which was away from residential roads, until 2.04am.

"Once it had been monitored it was allowed to burn out on its own," a spokesman said.
