The Entertainer toy store and Burger King to move into St James' Dover this autumn

The toy store, The Entertainer, and Burger King, are the latest brands to join the line-up at St James'.

Both will open later this autumn, adding to the 10 existing shops and restaurants at the new retail and leisure development at Woolcomber Street, Dover.

The Entertainer is family-owned and the fastest growing multichannel toy retailer in the UK.

It has taken a 2,960 sq ft unit at the 157,000 sq ft scheme.

Meanwhile the new fast food restaurant will be at the entrance to the scheme in a 2,580 sq ft unit on the ground floor of the Travelodge hotel building.

The Entertainer’s founder and chairman Gary Grant, said: “Our corporate values are highly community driven and St James; Dover, in the heart of the town, is the ideal location to establish ourselves in this part of Kent. We are pleased to be opening in Dover."

Mark Russell is senior fund manager for the development's owners by Legal & General Investment Management, Real Assets.

He said: “We are delighted to welcome both The Entertainer and Burger King as integral components to the mix at St James Dover. We are confident that this new development will entice those who would previously have bypassed the town centre to visit.”

Despite the £53.25 million St James' long being feared a threat to businesses in the wider town centre, new figures suggest it is helping the area.

Dover District Council’s Springboard Footfall figures showed a boost in shoppers of almost 60% across the town, excluding St James'. The year-to-date data covers the period from the start of 2018.

St James' took over a 157,000 sq ft chunk of land between Townwall Street, Woolcomber Street, Castle Street and the River Dour, which contained the 12-storey Burlington House, dubbed Dover's ugliest building.

That was knocked down in February 2016 and the site was completely redeveloped.

The first St James' business, the six-screen Cineworld, opened on March 9 this year.

Others that followed included the 108-bed Travelodge and Costa Coffee in April, Superdrug and the M&S Foodhall in May and Next in July.

After the main phasing in of these businesses St James' was officially opened on August 11.

Others now there are Trespass, The Food Warehouse by Iceland, Shoezone, Card Factory, Nando's and the 24-hour Anytime Fitness.

The site also has parking for 445 cars.

Some 90%, by floor area, of the development is let or in solicitors’ hands, with a further three lettings in negotiations.

LGIM RA estimates that the town has a residential catchment of 257,000 and a potential spend of £1.2 billion.
