Kent traffic: Delays on A20 after Dover Tap implemented at Alkham

Heavy traffic is being reported on the A20 as Dover Tap has been enforced by police.

The measure, called the Traffic Access Protocol, is in force along the section of the coastbound stretch of the road because of a large volume of lorries.

One lane has been closed and there are reports of heavy traffic, with the restrictions in place from Roundhill Tunnel (Hawkinge / Alkham) to Dover (Western Heights roundabout).

The left hand lane is only for lorries heading to the Port of Dover.

All other traffic should use the right hand lane.

Dover TAP is a temporary traffic management system which queues port-bound lorries on the nearside to prevent congestion in the town.

Traffic lights hold back lorries until space at the Port of Dover becomes available.

Meanwhile, freight traffic is facing waits of up to an hour at the Eurotunnel in Folkestone.
