Man arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft 'tried to hide from police behind tree'

A man who allegedly tried to evade police by running and hiding behind a tree has been arrested

Officers were called to the scene of a car on fire in Upper Road, Dover, shortly before 11am yesterday.

It was reported the vehicle had been stolen, and officers began to search for the suspect.

Police were looking for the suspect in Connaught Park, when they spotted a man they thought may be involved in the incident and approached him.

A spokesman said: "On seeing the officers, the man is reported to have run away and was found a short while later hiding behind a tree.

"He was detained and searched resulting in a knife being seized."

A man in his 30s from Yorkshire was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, driving without insurance, criminal damage and possessing a knife.

He has been bailed to the police station pending further enquiries until March 17.
