Archaeological dig at Kearsney Abbey reveals footings of former mansion

An archaeological dig at Kearsney Abbey has revealed the footings of a mansion that used to be on site.

Canterbury Archaeological Trust, and Dover and Folkestone Archaeological Groups made their discoveries of some of Dover’s heritage last weekend.

Before it took place, it was hoped that some of its remains would be found so that new plans for the extension of the cafe could be created.

Despite the district council having some pictures of the former site, no plans or details about the inside of it have been found. Also uncovered was a William III half penny, along with bricks, slate roof tile and moulded plaster.

A report from the archaeologists will be available in the coming weeks.
