Police have brought a schoolgirl back to the UK after she went missing from her home in Lincolnshire and was seen in Dover.

Laura Stainforth, 15, disappeared from her home in Cleethorpes with a man she met on the internet and was spotted on the Pride of Kent ferry heading across the Channel.

Laura's family are said to be "ecstatic" after the pair handed themselves in to the British consulate in Lille in north-east France.

Robert Williams, 49, appeared in court in France and is being kept in prison until Tuesday pending extradition proceedings.

In a statement, Lincolnshire police said they were continuing to work closely with both Laura and her family to ensure that they were re-united as soon as possible.

"Laura will be interviewed by specially-trained officers in order to establish her current state of well being and the circumstances surrounding the last week."

Mr Williams had been on bail after being questioned over an alleged teenage rape. He is now being held after a European arrest warrant was issued against him.
