An investigation is under way after the death of a man whose body was found in the back of a foreign lorry which entered the country through Dover.

The Italian-registered truck took the M20, the M25 and the M3 to Winchester, where it was stopped by police at around noon on Tuesday.

They found the body of an oriental man, thought to be aged between 25 and 30.

The Italian lorry driver, a 45 year old man was arrested at the scene and is still being questioned.

A post mortem carried out on Monday was inconclusive.

Det Supt Dave Williams from Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Department said: "At this stage there is no pathological evidence to suggest foul play.

"Although the man was wearing several layers of clothing and seemed prepared for the cold conditions, we can’t rule out the possibility he died through hypothermia or other natural causes."

Police are now working with border agency officials to try and identify the man.

They are also trying to trace other people believed to have been in the lorry when it came through Dover, possibly a woman and a child. Officers believe they may have escaped on the M25 or the M3.
