A Kent Police spokesman said: "The driver of the car sustained injuries.

"Officers enforced a road closure to assist the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service."

The road was at first completely shut and one lane was reopened at around 2pm.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service says it sent two engines to the incident and helped make the area safe.

Kent historian Steve Salter, travelling to Dover, came across the scene and his photographs show two police officers examining the damaged car.

He told Kent Online: "It was a Honda Civic and it was under the back of the tractor trailer."

National Highways initially warned drivers that the A2 coastbound was shut between the A260 Aylesham turnoff and A256 at Whitfield.

Its website had then said: "National Highways are working closely with Kent Police to ensure the incident is cleared as quickly as possible.

"Traffic is currently being diverted via local routes."

KentOnline has also contacted the other emergency services to find out more details.
