Spitfire flypast as part of Queen's Baton Relay for Commonwealth Games

A Spitfire will fly over Dover tomorrow as part of the Queen's Baton Relay celebrations.

Fans of the aircraft are advised to look up between 6.45pm and 7pm as it files over the port town.

The flypast is part of the celebrations for the Queen's Baton Relay, which involves the baton being passed through Commonwealth countries and territories around the world before reaching Birmingham by July 28, when this year's Commonwealth Games begin.

The relay in Kent will start in Tonbridge, the route taking in the Castle, and then at Canterbury it will go from Westgate Towers to the Cathedral.

After, that it is planned to arrive in at 3.30pm in Folkestone at the F51 multi-storey skatepark off Dover Road.

The baton will afterwards be taken to the town's Harbour Arm and carried on a boat to Deal.

Among those also greeting the entourage at Deal pier will be town Rotarians The Rotary Pirates, with the occasion also being marked by sea shanties from the Kellet Gut Shantymen.

The relay will leave Deal at 6pm and will be taken along the promenade to the Deal Memorial Bandstand on Walmer Green where there will be also entertainment.

The baton will leave the Bandstand and be relayed to the Borrow Pitt car park where it will be taken to Dover by car.

A free party for 2,500 people is being held at Dover Castle but all tickets have now been allocated.

That event will include a gun salute, costumed characters ans music from the The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment Band.

The Castle will be lit up in red, white and blue.

It leaves Kent at Gravesend next day, via the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara at Khalsa Avenue.

It will then be taken to the Midlands via Essex and East Anglia.
