Dover’s Winter Light Up festival for Christmas this weekend

Dover will be filled with light when eight giant lantern sculptures take to the streets tomorrow.

A total 500 smaller star lanterns will also be carried.

The procession will leave Maison Dieu Road Car Park near Biggin Hall at 6pm and go through Biggin Street and Cannon Street arriving at 6.45pm at Market Square.

The lanterns are made from bamboo, willow and tissue paper.

They are more than four metres tall and this year have images of animals including a deer, cow, frog and falcon.

The artwork is from the group Future Foundry and procession is part of Dover’s Winter Light Up event.

This is a series of Christmas activities taking place today and tomorrow in and around Market Square including live music, Santa Claus, food and drink.

Other Christmas events in the Dover district include:

A Christmas celebration concert is being held this Sunday at St Mary's Arts Centre in Sandwich.

From 2.30pm, visitors will hear a selection of Christmas music with sing-a-long songs and carols from the Sandwich Concert Band and Training Band.

Ticket price also includes a glass of mulled wine or juice, and a mince pie. Tickets are £10, and under 18s go free.

Enchanted Walmer is from today until December 30.

Visitors can wander the grounds of Walmer Castle and discover a magical world of illumination, sound and colour.

A Christmas Carol Sing-a-long is at Dover Oddfellows Club in Pencester Road on Friday, December 16, at 10.30am.

Carols on the Green is in Walmer on Saturday, December 17, between 5pm and 6.30pm.

This is the re-telling of the Christmas story with carols, musicians and solo performances.

The Walmer Town Council event is in front of the Sea Cafe in Walmer Green. If there is bad weather it will move to St Saviours Church opposite the Lifeboat House.

On Sunday, December 18, The 16th Kent Christmas Cracker is back at Betteshanger Park.

There are three races for this event including a children's fun run, a two mile fun run and a five mile run.

Runners are encouraged to race in festive gear while enjoying the great Christmas race atmosphere.

The 53rd Boxing Day Dip is set to take place at 11am at Deal seafront.

Fundraisers will brave the icy sea all the raise money for their chosen charity.

Organised by the Rotary Club, dippers are asked to pre-register for the event via their GoFundMe page.

There is also £10 registration fee.
