A man who was threatening to jump into the sea from the end of a pier was saved by police.

The distressed man phoned police in the early hours of Wednesday to say he was feeling suicidal.

The operator at the control room managed to find out he was calling from the Prince of Wales pier in Dover and alerted police patrols in the town.

Officers managed to grab the man to prevent him falling from the edge of the pier.

He was taken into custody so police could arrange to get him help.
