A lorry driver has been jailed for smuggling drugs worth £2.5million into the country through Dover.

Eric Oliver, 49, was found guilty of smuggling 300kgs of amphetamine sulphate.

He was jailed for ten-and-a-half years at Canterbury Crown Court.

The court heard that Oliver, of St Andrews Road, Hayling Island, Hampshire, was stopped by customs officers at Dover Eastern Docks on June 17, last year.

He was driving a British-registered lorry with a declared load of air freight en route from Schiphol Airport, Holland, to Heathrow.

After questioning Oliver, customs officers searched the cab and trailer and discovered 12 unmarked white boxes at the back of the load.

When opened, each box revealed clear bags containing a white powder which, when tested, showed a positive result for amphetamine.

Sentencing Oliver, Judge Michael O’Sullivan said: "You acted as a courier, which is not an insubordinate role, and would have been a trusted participant."
