Train delays between Faversham and London to end after stolen cables fixed by Network Rail

Trains are returning to normal for the evening rush-hour after electrical cables stolen last night sparked travel misery across Kent today.

The line through Faversham reopened at around 11.30am but knock-on delays were affecting trains until around 3pm when the issues finally cleared.

Delays have been hampering services throughout the day after engineers carried out a temporary fix this morning.

Network Rail staff started work at midnight to fix the problem after 150 metres of signalling cables were taken.

The company says engineers will return to the site tonight to work on a permanent fix.

Southeastern had earlier warned delays were expected to remain until 1pm.

The incident reported between Faversham and Whitstable has been causing cancellations and trains to run behind schedule throughout the day.

Southeastern has warned some routes "may be revised".

Trains into the capital have been running up to 45 minutes late because of the incident with services cancelled or partially cancelled this morning.

The 11.25am service from Broadstairs to London St Pancras will not stop between Broadstairs and Whitstable and is running up to 17 minutes late from Faversham.

Passengers have been urged to check before they travel on the National Rail journey planner.

Elsewhere in the county, disruption was caused to commuters near Maidstone after a tresspasser got on to the line near Wateringbury.
