Gravesend: Woman found in sleeping bag in April named as Mary Lane but cause of death unclear

It remains unclear how a homeless woman found in a sleeping bag six months ago died.

Mary Lane, who remained unidentified for several weeks, was discovered in a wooded area off Thames Way , Gravesend, on Sunday, April 22.

The 53-year-old was in a blue sleeping bag which was spotted by Kieran Reeves, 25, as he walked home from work. He told KentOnline's sister paper the Gravesend Messenger it was apparent she had been there for some time.

Forensics teams spent almost a week at the scene, near Asda, before Ms Lane's death was judged to be non-suspicious.

An inquest has now opened into her death at Maidstone's Archbishop's Palace.

A coroner was told Ms Lane's cause of death remains unascertained.

The inquest was adjourned and will resume on Wednesday, November 7.

Last week we reported 449 people died on the streets in the past year, 12 of whom were in Kent.

But Ms Lane's death was not included on that list.
