A mass convoy of fuel protesters through Kent did not cause the traffic mayhem predicted.

Around 40 vehicles were said to be heading from the M2 services at Farthing Corner, making for the Dartford Tunnel.

It left at around 8.15am, and was set to head for an Essex oil refinery.

But instead of the 40 vehicles planned, just five turned out. And there was no disruption or delays to traffic.

Speaking before the event, Assistant Chief Constable Gary Beautridge said: "We have to strike a balance between the lawful rights of protesters and those of people who go about their daily life unimpeded.

"Our priority is to ensure the safety of the travelling public."
