Hythe Town beat Ramsgate 3-1 to reach FA Trophy Second Round for the first time | Cannons face Herne Bay in Isthmian South East this weekend

Hythe are through to the FA Trophy Second Round for the first time in their history.

They beat a young Ramsgate side 3-1 in last night’s rearranged First-Round tie at Reachfields.

Their reward is another Kent derby at home to National League South Tonbridge on November 18.

Cannons boss Steve Watt played under Angels manager Jay Saunders at Maidstone, later serving as his No.2 at the Gallagher Stadium.

Hythe had been due to face Ramsgate on Saturday but the match was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

It was rearranged for Tuesday night, in line with FA guidelines, but against Rams’ wishes, with the Thanet club just days away from facing Woking in the FA Cup First Round.

The visitors fielded their under-23s, with the exception of centre-back Joe Ellul.

Hythe proved too strong, with Ethan Smith scoring a first-minute opener and Aaron Barnes doubling the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Johan Caney-Bryan added a third midway through the second half, with Wes Hennessey replying at the death.

Hythe return to Isthmian South East action at home to Herne Bay on Saturday (3pm).

Bay are managed by Steve Lovell, the last visiting boss to win a league game at Reachfields while in charge of Ramsgate on Boxing Day last year.

The former Gills chief has guided his new club to second in the table, with Hythe five points back in 11th, albeit with three games in hand.

“Loves is one of the best managers in the league and someone I get on well with,” said Watt.

“He did a great job at Ramsgate last season before getting moved on and he’s started really well at Herne Bay.

“We’ve got a few ex-Herne Bay players who will want to do well against their old club.

“Brad Schafer got promoted with them, Jake Embery burst on the scene there and we’ve got Jarred Trespaderne and Jack Steventon who started their careers there.

“It should be a good game on Saturday.

“We want to be where they are in the table.

“We’ve got a few games in hand but you want to beat these teams when you play them, to try and catch them and still have your games in hand.”

Hythe visit Ashford in a rearranged Velocity Cup tie on Tuesday (7.45pm).
