Hythe boss Steve Watt could tell it wasn’t going to be his side’s day in the FA Cup.
Watt says the Cannons were miles off the pace in their 2-0 home defeat by Hanworth Villa on Saturday.
The visitors struck in either half to settle the First Qualifying Round tie and inflict a first defeat of the season on Hythe.
“We were poor - it was a bad day at the office,” said Watt.
“Give them credit - they fully deserved their win - but we were miles off it.
“It looked like they wanted it more and fair play to them.
“To be honest, I knew quite early on it wasn’t going to be our day. I could just tell.
“We lacked any real cutting edge and we were too open.
“It was 2-0 but it could have been more. You lick your wounds and move on.
“Certain things we do successfully in causing teams problems weren’t working and, likewise, things we’d normally deal with and stop, we weren’t doing, so I could see what was happening.
“I was like, ‘This might not be our day’ and so it proved.
“Both goals were mistakes by us.
“We’ve given the ball away in the middle of the park for the first one and we’ve not cleared the ball for the second one.
“It’s two bad goals but I’ve absolutely no complaints about the result. They were well worth their goals.
“Everyone wanted a good cup run but it is what it is.
“I’d rather a performance like that happened in the cup than the league.”
Hythe are in knockout action again this Saturday (3pm), visiting fellow Isthmian South East club Burgess Hill in the FA Trophy First Qualifying Round.
“Every year, you want to do well in both cup competitions,” said Watt.
“It’ll be another tough game at Burgess Hill - it’s never an easy place to go.
“First and foremost, we need to put on a better performance than we did last Saturday and hopefully get a result.”
Hythe’s home game against Ashford, abandoned on Bank Holiday Monday after Nuts & Bolts midfielder Adem Ramadan suffered a double leg break, has been rearranged for Tuesday, October 3 (7.45pm).
