Things to do in Kent in September 2019 including Medway Model Show and Dragon Boat Racing at Bewl Water

If the six-week school break has seen the bank balance take a big hit, fear not!

We have rounded up some of the best family events in September that can either be enjoyed for free or which have very small admission charges.

Here are seven events to see out the last of the summer that won't set you back...

1. TAG Pet Rescue open day, Margate

Sunday, September 1

Lydden Farm in Valley Road will be opening its doors to visitors on Sunday for its big annual open day and you can meet the animals for just £1.

There will be fun stalls in the farm yard, homemade cakes and food, games, music and a chance to visit the animals. The centre says there is also ample free parking for the event that is running between 11am and 4pm. Further information about the organisation and the event itself can be found here.

2. Dragon Boat Race, Bewl Water Lamberhurst

Saturday, September 7

The annual Dragon Boat Festival comes to Bewl Water on September 7. Bring a picnic and enjoy watching the teams compete on the water.

There will also be stalls selling cakes and other goodies, entertainment and people in interesting and unusual fancy dress!

You can enjoy Bewl Water all day just for the cost of your parking which is £4 per vehicle.

3. Medway Model Show, Rochester

Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8

Fort Pitt Grammar School is hosting the Medway Model Show between 10am and 5pm on the Saturday (7) and 10am and 4pm on September 8.

There will be a variety of layouts to see to interest both enthusiasts and those visitors looking for something to do with young family members, plus modelling demonstrations and a range of hot and cold food available.

There is free on-site parking as well as a free shuttle bus service running and admission is just £2 for children, £5 for adults or £12 for a family. More details here.

4. Westerham Country Fayre, Westerham

Saturday, September 14

Country crafts, activities, produce, local stalls, entertainment, food, drink, music, a family trail and a horticultural show can all be found on Westerham Green on September 14.

There will be lots to entertain families including Punch and Judy shows, chainsaw carving demonstrations and bee-keepers with a skeleton hive for families to see what is happening inside. Further details available here.

5. Classic Car Show and Family Fun Day, Kenward Trust, Yalding
Sunday, September 15

It's just £2 to enter this classic car show and family fun day - with children under 12 free!

The event takes place between 10am and 4pm. As well as the car show and fun day is Kenward Trust's woodland walk, children's play area and friendly animals, including a family of alpacas! There will also be a boot fair for anyone on the lookout for a bargain. Additional information available here.

6. Duck Race 2019, Westgate Gardens, Canterbury

Sunday, September 15

The Rotary Club's annual duck race will set sail down the Stour on Sunday, September 15. Sponsor a duck and cheer it on alongside friends and family at this fun event in the Westgate Gardens.

More ducks than ever before are set to line up this year with money raised going towards both local and international causes.

The event will open at 11am; weather and conditions allowing, the race will start at 1pm. Finish times will depend on conditions on the day. To stay up to date on where and when you can sponsor your duck please click here.

7. Ploughing Match and Gymkana, Paddlesworth Farm, Snodland

Saturday, September 21

Ploughing competitions, trade and craft stalls, a hawking display, laser clay shooting, gymkhana, and produce for sale will be among the attractions at this event organised by Gravesend and Rochester Agricultural Association.

The ploughing Competition will include conventional, vintage, steam and horses and there will also be cookery, crafts and competitions for children and adults. Events start from 9.30am and entry for a car is only £5.
