An intrepid pair of animal lovers are seeking help to carry out a mercy mission thousands of miles from home.

Matthew Trussell, 26, a sales assistant from Chatham and his girlfriend Charlotte McNamara, 21, a student from Meopham, are dedicated to caring for sick and distressed animals.

This summer, they will put their dedication to the test as they head to Sri Lanka with the charity Home and Abroad Animal Welfare.

The charity runs projects in Europe but also specialises in Sri Lanka, focusing on an area around the capital Columbo.

It promotes animal care by educating local communities and providing medical aid and food.

But the pair needs to raise more than £1,000 to fund their six-week trip, which starts in July.

Miss McNamara, said: “We are really excited about this opportunity to help, although we don’t doubt it will be upsetting.

“We’re so eager to get involved and make a difference to animals’ lives. Any donation will be greatly received and every penny will be appreciated.”

The trip will focus mainly on the care of street animals but will also take the pair into slaughterhouses.

Miss McNamara, said: “We will assist in talks to the slaughter-men to teach them how to quickly and effectively slaughter, without inflicting unnecessary pain or distress.

“We shall be also be helping to organise and build ramps for the cows to get on and off lorries without injuring themselves.”

Anyone interested in sponsoring them should call 07787 104605.
