The lodger found guilty this week of allowing the death of child Baby P in Haringey is from Kent.

Jason Owen, 36, formerly of Wittersham Road, Bromley, was found guilty at the Central Criminal Court on Tuesday of causing or allowing the death of a child.

He was living with the 26-year-old mother of the toddler and her 32-year-old boyfriend.

The mother had already pleaded guilty to causing or allowing the death of a child and her boyfriend was convicted alongside Owen on Tuesday for the same offence.

The toddler was subjected to severe abuse from the 32-year-old man who had an obsession with knives and collected Nazi military memorabilia, including helmets and daggers decorated with swastikas.

Baby P was used as a punchbag and had his fingernails pinched – possibly ripped off by pliers – until they fell off.

This happened while his 26-year-old mother chain-smoked, gossiped in internet chat sites and played online poker.

Jason Owen and the woman were originally charged with murder but these charges were discontinued during proceedings.

In July 2007 – the month before Baby P died - Owen moved in with the woman, her boyfriend and Baby P together with his three children and his 15-year-old girlfriend.

Four days before Baby P's death Owen said the boy's mother and stepfather smeared his face, hands and clothes with chocolate and nappy cream so the social worker would not see his injuries.

Officers from the Child Abuse Investigation Command were called by North Middlesex Hospital to reports of a child death on August 3.

A post mortem at Great Ormond Street Hospital on August 6 proved inconclusive but further tests revealed the toddler had suffered numerous injuries, including a spinal fracture which had caused his internal organs to fail.

Police then arrested his mother and her partner in connection with the child's death. Investigating officers arrested Owen on August 14.

All three are due to be sentenced at the Central Criminal Court on December 15.
