Sir Richard Branson has entered the record books as the oldest person to kite-surf the English Channel.

It was the 61-year-old's second attempt in 24 hours.

But the businessman failed to beat the record for the fastest kite-surf, set by his son on Saturday.

The Virgin boss had to originally give up halfway across the sea today on Saturday, and make his journey from France to Folkestone on a boat instead.

But his 27-year-old offspring became the fastest person to kite-surf solo across the Channel, landing on the beach at the Rotunda area of Folkestone in 2hrs 18 mins. The previous record was 2hrs 30mins - set in 1999.

Sam and the eight others who finished also set the record for fastest group for this form of crossing, which had no previous record.
