Saturday was another game where we came home with nothing. However well we did to get back into the game at Bury after giving away two sloppy goals – one from a penalty which looked soft - we know you can’t give any team a cheap lead and expect to get anything.
We were all disappointed that when we twice drew level, we couldn’t hold out for a point.
To finish the game scoring four goals away from home and not winning was hard to take but individual mistakes throughout the game cost us.
As players you obviously don’t mean to make mistakes – and, to be fair, I don’t think we have made many, especially away from home – but it seems we get punished for every one we do make, whether it be a lack of concentration or giving the ball away.
It was another tough learning curve for everybody and we must stay calm and focused and continue working hard on improving, which we certainly do in training.
Hopefully, against Shrewsbury on Saturday back at Priestfield, we can finally kick start our season, although we are under no illusions that it is going to be difficult against a side that have started well and are top of the league.
They may still be bitter and desperate to beat us after our victory a couple of seasons ago in the League 2 play-off final at Wembley.
But they are where we want to be – at the top – so we will be doing everything to get another one over them.
During the week, the gaffer decided it was time for a bit of team bonding so we put on our Army overalls and went to battle in a game of paintball.
The team was split into young versus old and just like on the training pitch the oldens’ experience and strategy paid off and it did turn out men versus boys.
It was surprising how bad the young boys were as half of them spend every spare minute playing Call of Duty online against each other, so they were living out some fantasy with live action.
It was good fun and great for team morale, which can only help in our push for that first victory.
Look forward to seeing everyone at Priestfield on Saturday!
